FILMS
Not Easily Broken
This is a feature film that was released in January of 2009 by Sony/TriStar. I was approached in late 2006 by Sony and Bishop TD Jakes to adapt the novel of the same name by Jakes.
Below are the various written stepping stones along the way. Including additional documents so you can travel the development process with me if you’re so inclined and are a glutton for punishment.
- Treatment
- 1st Draft
- Studio notes on 1st Draft (studio names have been redacted)
- Shooting Script
There were a few additional scenes I wrote on set during production. Here is one director Bill Duke asked me to write because we needed some comic relief in what was clearly a relentlessly dramatic third act. I wrote this in about an hour and comedian Kevin Hart, playing the character of “Tree,” used it as a jumping off point.
Here is a post I was asked to write for the Bishop’s blog as the film was getting ready to come to market.
Thanks Brian
Just downloaded and printed the above and I hope to walk through the process of how you went about writing. I’d be keen to read any footnotes you may have on your approach to, for instance how you researched the dialogue (which was very strong.)
